Limits

Using the limit options will allow you to narrow your search and, as a result, receive more accurate results. When first beginning your search you may want to begin as broad as possible and then narrow your search in subsequent searches. The limits will let you specify:

• in what language the results list items are written,
• the location of the materials in the results list,
• the date in which the items in the results list were produced,
• the type of materials that will be included in the results list,
• the place where the results list items were published and
• whether these items are currently being published, or are out-of-print.

The limit options are NOT available for the following searches: Subject heading, Author, Author -- Sorted by Title, Call number, Heading list and Course Reserve searches. Limit options are in effect once you set them until you click on the clear limits button on the search screen.

To set the limits before you begin searching just click on the Limit Options button located on the bottom right hand corner of the search screen. You can choose which limits you would like to set and then click Set Limits which will return you to your search screen. You can continue entering in your search terms and when you click on Search, the database will use the limits you choose to narrow your search. Remember if you want to clear your limits for further searches you must click on the Clear Limits button or your limits will continue to apply to your searches.

Once you have performed a search you need to be viewing the Title List before you can apply limits to the search results. You can do this by choosing the POST LIMIT button at the top right hand corner of the result list page. Choose which limits you would like to have applied to the results list and click on the button Set Limits.

To choose more than one Limit per category just hold down the [Ctrl] key or [Apple] key and highlight another option from the drop down box. Just click on any of the highlighted limits again to deselect that choice.

When performing searches using the search history option, the limits that will be used during the search are the current limits, any limits that were used when the searches were originally preformed are NOT in effect. You need to reset any old limits to get the exact same results.

There are four options for limiting results in the date limit option. You can type in the first box the date and then choose whether you want

• all results to have been published within that year click on the equal sign [=]
• all results to have been published after that date choose the greater-than-sign [>]
• all results to have been published before that date choose the less-than-sign [<]
• all results to have been published between certain years choose Range and enter an ending year.

English is listed first, all other language are in alphabetical order.

Item and Material Types will allow you to retrieve just books, periodicals, videorecordings, music scores, films, etc. Check both lists for the item or material types you would like to search.

The place in which the book was published are listed in alphabetical order, states within the United States are also listed alphabetically by their names. Publication Status will allow you to search for items that are "ceased" or out-of-print.
